Day 183

July 2nd, 2010

This morning I decided to use the new waffle maker. I was super excited to actually make waffles... and then Steve told me that he was going to run to the bank, the post office and to get his oil changed. :(   So I decided to make waffles for myself and Gus.

Dry ingredients

Separating the egg yolks and whites

The egg whites

Waffle goo

Hot, crispy, melt-in-your-mouth goodness!!

Seriously... Gus and I loved them!!!

Steve got back and I made him a waffle and he agreed that it was delicious. Gus played for a while this morning... he has figured out that he can stand on his dino-rider and can reach more toys in the pack-n-play that currently holds his toys.

After I moved the dino-rider... he and I played with some puzzles and then he decided to play with Elphie. He was trying to sit on her... it was actually really funny-- my pictures didn't do it justice!
Literally sitting on Elphie

Gus took a nap (for an hour) and then we had lunch. I decided to test my Fry Daddy and see how it worked. I DO like it... but I do NOT like the way it makes the house stink after using it. I made two cheese sticks... they were okay- no need to make them again. Then I made some fried pickles... again... not the best. And then some onion rings. They were okay... better than the other two. Lastly, I used it for making some fries and they were amazing. I'll probably only use it for fries next time. Here are some pictures:

Fried pickles

French Fries with sea salt

Tonight we headed to Fiesta Mexicana for dinner. It's the new Mexican restaurant by our Harris Teeter (like five minutes away). It has been in the works for a while (at least two months) and finally opened this weekend. I was hesitant to go with it just opening, but it wasn't too bad. The food was decent (not the best Mexican, but not the worst), there was no wait to get a table, and the prices were good. The service... that needs some work, but all things considering, it wasn't bad. We'll probably go back... not right away, but maybe in a few months or so.

We came home, had some ice cream and then watched a movie. I just got off the phone with my dad... they had some major storms pass through their way and a neighbor's tree went down, hit one of their cars in their driveway, and ripped out the power line that runs to their house. They are completely without power... and my mom just had major surgery. They've got no air... he's got a generator, but it's in the garage and he can't get to the garage due to the tree. I wish there was something I could do... there's nothing worse than being so far away that there's literally nothing I can do to help them.

Hopefully tomorrow they'll get a better idea of what the damage is. It all happened around 8 tonight and it was already getting dark. He said they'll have to get the tree removed, then the powerline reconnected and it'll take an electrician to do that. All that and it's a holiday weekend, so the absolute soonest that they'll have power is Wednesday.

Heavy sigh.

Anyway-- I'm off to bed. Sending them lots of prayers tonight.

Day 182

Gus today and exactly one year ago today

Happy July 1st!! I decided that I'd start posting a current picture and a picture from a year ago... the growth/change is incredible!! A year ago, Gus was able to smile and that was about it. He was eating four ounces of formula every two hours, was taking Mylicon for his spit-up, and was going to bed at 11:30 at night and waking at 5am!! He weighed around 10 pounds and was about 23 inches tall.

Today was a pretty good day. It's a new month and I always look forward to the start of the month, because it's a great time to make changes and progress forward.

This morning Gus got up around 5:00 and it was right when Steve was getting up for work. Thankfully, he went in with me and helped me with Gus. Gus didn't go back to sleep until 6:00ish and then was back up around 7:15. I guess the good thing is that other than the 5am time, he didn't wake at all. Steve said he had soaked through his diaper... which is probably why he woke at 5:00.

We came downstairs and had breakfast and then I gave Gus the little flashlight to play with. He LOVES it!!!

Then I turned on the AppleTV and Gus enjoyed the music and seeing himself on the television.

Gus had a snack and then decided to try and climb OVER the couch... he's a wacky boy sometimes!!!

I put him off the couch and he started to play with his towel and rub his eyes. I knew it was time for his nap.

I put him down for his nap at 11:00 and thought that it'd be a perfect amount of sleep for him to get before we had to leave at 12:30 for The Pit. We had lunch reservations and were meeting some of Steve's former work friends. It's about 20-25 minutes to downtown Raleigh, so I wanted to leave the house by 12:40 so I'd get there for our 1:15 reservation.

Unfortunately, Gus didn't go down easily and didn't actually fall asleep until 11:45... and I had to get him up at 12:15 to get changed, dressed, and loaded into the car. I wanted to make sure he was well-rested and in a good mood for lunch.

He was in a good mood, and I was amazed at how well he did for having such a little amount of sleep. He had some string cheese, mandarin oranges and two Mum Mum crackers before everyone arrived. I wanted to make sure he wasn't starving while we took our time to order... it was a good plan because he was hungry when the food arrived. He shared Steve's chopped pork and brisket. I had the Carolina Style ribs (soooooo good) and a side salad and mashed potatoes with gravy. It was the lunch menu and the prices were almost 1/2 of what you pay at dinner.

Here are some pictures from lunch:

Gus tried lemon for the first time...

He didn't seem to care either way for it. Then I rubbed some of it on his teether and he made all kinds of funny faces.  :)

Gus and Natasha. She was Steve's intern and such an incredible woman!!

This is Jenny. She and Steve share the same passion. If Jenny, Natasha and Steve got together and ran a company-- there'd be some amazing things happening!!!

Steve and Gus with Jenny and her husband and Natasha and her coworker  :)

Jenny and Steve had some things to continue discussing, so I took Gus home. On the way he fell asleep (of course), so to keep the car in motion... I decided to stop at Sonic for Happy Hour and I got a LemonBerry slush for $.90  :)

We got home and Gus woke up just as I pulled into the driveway (SCORE). He had about 25 minutes of naptime in the car... which isn't too bad.

He was in a GREAT mood, so I decided to take a few more pictures of him... I'm so glad I did! They turned out to be so adorable!!

Running

Looking at Hobo on the screened porch  >^..^<

One legged boy? Nope... mid-run!!

Steve got home an hour or so later and we watched Hard Core Pawn and played with the Duplos. Gus was getting really tired (it was after 5) and we decided to try a nap. It was no good. He didn't fall asleep until 6:30 (almost bedtime). Then he got up at 7:00 for dinner...

His whole schedule was thrown off. Hopefully he'll sleep well tonight. We took him to bed at 8:00.

See you tomorrow!
