This is for yesterday... sorry that I didn't blog last night!! We had our House Party for Velveeta dinner creations at 1:00 and Will and Adri came. They were the only ones that came, and it meant a lot that they came down from Wake Forest for the party. We had lunch and then Gus got up from his nap, and Steve fed him.
Here are a few pictures from the morning:
Then we packed up the car and headed to Spivey's Corner for the 43rd Annual National Hollerin' Championship! We took Gus's play yard and some toys for him and he was super happy to be able to walk around and play. We brought blankets for him to play on and a sheet for a shade for him. It was pretty much perfect!
When we first got to Spivey's Corner, there was a fireman dressed as a fire dog... it was so hot I don't know how he didn't pass out from heat stroke. Gus wasn't too sure about him, but didn't cry or anything so it was all good.
Here are other pictures during the day while we waited for the contests to begin:

The first contest was the Conch Blowing Contest... there were two contestants and the two guys won:
They won
Then there was the Junior Hollerin' Contest. The first girl won, but I think the second girl should have won!
The winner
Calling her dog "Leeeeeeeee Roooooooyyyyyyy" So cute!
This little one was too scared to holler and was crying :(
Then there was a break and it was time for the "Ladie's Callin" contest:
Steve enjoying the entertainment and a steak sandwich!
2nd Place winner (she did the National Anthem as a holler)...
The winner
Then there was another break and it was time for the National Hollerin' Contest to begin!
National Anthem
1st Guy... his family was on vacation in Chicago-- he flew down for the contest and is flying back to join them and continue his vacation...
Local from Dunn He had summer teeth
Tony Peacock!!! He was the Writer in Residence two years in a row in my classroom when I taught at Oak Grove! He's a super nice guy and the 2010 National Hollerin' Champion
He was terrible- he YELLED and screamed and spent waaaaaay too much time calling for his dogs. His wife should have told him when to stop... instead he drug out his time and it was awful!
US Marine... he didn't holler.... he did various calls as a drill instructor. He was good, but it wasn't hollerin', and I didn't expect him to win
Okay-- NOT someone that could/would ever win... but he was AWESOME! He was from Australia and was so funny. He basically made fun of hollerin' and was imitating it by hollerin' about colored t-shirts that people were wearing, hats, hollerin' down low (on his back) and then up high (falsetto voice), and then he was hollerin' about how great the USA is... and asking if he had beat the world record for the longest holler... it was AWESOME!
On his back
Grabbing someone's hat
His friend came up to get him and the MC booted him off the microphone!!
The guy that we met earlier in the day... but he was TERRIBLE. He squeeled like a pig and made disgusting animals noises. He also yelled into the microphone and wasn't doing "traditional" hollerin'
Don't remember him... he was last and not very good.
After the men all went, they called them all back on the stage and announced 3rd place, 2nd place and then the 2011 National Hollerin' Champion.
3rd Place
2nd Place
1st Place
After the contest was over we left and drove through some SCARY wind and rain!! We headed to Cracker Barrel for dinner and then we headed home. On the way home we stopped at Sunny Sky's for some homemade ice cream... it was delicious!!!

Inside Sunny Sky's
View from inside the car... I waited inside the car with Gus while Steve, Will and Adri went in to get the goods
We got home around 9:00 and then Will and Adri said goodbye, we unpacked the car and then put Gus to bed and Steve went to bed. I stayed up editing my pictures for a while and then went to bed.
